In today’s fast moving world, we usually encounter a number of people, who are either out of shape or are carrying along a number of hidden deficiencies and diseases. These are the people, who are either negligent or insensitive towards the healthiness of their diet and lifestyle. They just remember to eat but eat to satiate their taste buds. But in those cases, it is almost certain that they are going to be trapped in the serious health hazards in the time to come. They should appreciate the fact that the body cells, which do not get good food for their nourishment would get choked with various toxins. Therefore, one needs to be fully aware of one’s healthy intake and need to keep a few things in mind.

VEGETABLES  INGREDIENT

With little or no vegetables in one’s daily diet and solely survival on foods like dhoklas, idlis or biryanis, one thinks that one is taking the most nourished and low caloric food but that poor fellow should know that such food patterns may lead to lethargic and degenerative diseases. Vegetables and green leafy vegetables are of utmost importance and should become an indigenous part of one’s dietary plans, but it has been observed that these are not preferred by the taste buds of our younger generations when options of kadhi chawal or channa diet is there. But it is mandatory for everyone to adjust the tastebuds for these green nourishments as well.

READY TO EAT FOODS

The human body needs energy to perform different daily activities. The energy level of one’s body depends upon the fuel in the shape of food, one takes. Due to hectic lifestyle in today’s world, most of the people prefer fast food and ready to eat food to save their precious time but while doing so, they forget about their most precious belonging… their good health. Most of the times, the choices of ready to eat foods of such unaware people are artificially sweetened or are made salty with mono sodium glutamate to satisfy their tastebuds but these bring along with them a package of side effects for their body health. Therefore,  under such situations, one should be aware enough to select the healthy options of the ready to eat foods.

EXCESSIVE TEA OR COFFEE

Excessive consumption of tea and coffee for the sake of taste buds is another road block for good health, as these are the strong stimulants, posing health hazards in one’s healthy life. Rather one should go for other healthy options like buttermilk, coconut water, vegetable juices or lemon waters. Drinking any damn liquid cannot be taken for guaranteed for effective weight loss but excessive intake of tea and coffee may happen to be the major culprit for non effectiveness of weight loss diets.

OILY SNACKS

Spring rolls, cream soups, momos are the first choice of many of so called health conscious youngsters, which they relish after doing strenuous exercises, as these are easily available comfort foods to replenish their energy levels. After doing great bone breaking exercises in the gyms, their bodies get exhausted with low energy levels and they fall easy prey to the vendors of such items, waiting outside gyms. To avoid such situations, one needs to control one’s taste buds, and prefer home made healthy options else all efforts made in the gym will go in vein.

FANCY WESTERN DIETS

Imitating western diets, Indian foods are also getting fancier. Burgers, sandwiches, flavoured juices, muffins are becoming first meal choices in the morning. What is needed in today’s life is quality food and not the fancy food. Proper nutrition should be the priority to maximise the vitality levels. The kick starting of the day should be with the most energetic and nutritious food though it may be a simple preparation.

EATING WHILE CHEATING
Practically speaking, no one can and  no one likes to lead a fully disciplined life. There comes some moments in life, when one intends to deviate from the line, as no one can live under restrictions and instructions all the time. Same is the case with eating habits. What we need to understand is how to keep a balance between various choices at such times. We may not control our cravings for sweet or some spicy food at some point of time.  But what we need to understand is how or what portion of that particular tempting food we should eat. Therefore, at such juncture, we need to look for:

Guilt free food :

At such moments, our choice of food should be such that we should not have guilt feeling later on. There are times when we are on some outings and on seeing some tempting foods, we do not think twice before consuming it. Therefore, the main habit, which needs to be inculcated is to ask ourself a few questions before making any choices that what we are going to consume is only to fill up our intestines or is it going to give us some nutritional benefits also. Only then we can make a wiser choice of food like non fried over fried one or heavily sugar laden over the lesser one. Yes, this simple habit is the key trick and will definitely make us guilt free.

High G.I.Foods :

Food with high glycemic index such as white sugar, white flour, processed foods etc are the main culprits to spoil our diet plans if consumed in excess. Foods with high glycemic index release glucose rapidly as compared to the foods with low glycemic index. Foods with low G.I also help to keep us full for longer time and thus become instrumental in weight loss.

Alcohol intake :

Alcohol is generally considered as a hindrance in losing weight. Although as a Dietitian, I cannot recommend its consumption on daily basis, yet in case of its craving at occasions, its consumption should be kept as bare minimum. Alcohol intake stimulates the appetite and there is a tendency of consuming wrong kinds of food with it. Many a times, fried or caloric foods are obvious companions of alcohol. Further calories in alcohol lack the requisite nutrients and additionally hasten the fat storage in our body. Which further slows down our metabolism, hindering weight loss.

Aerated drinks :

Aerated drinks interfere with calcium, magnesium and other trace elements absorption. Cutting out these drinks leads to balancing of hormones  in women leading to reduction in migraines and depressions. The worst combination is of junk food and aerated drinks which further raise our insulin levels. Such foods keep us full without  giving any nutritional benefits. Therefore, healthy options like lemon water, jaljeera, tamarind water and buttermilk should be consumed to counter the cravings for aerated drinks.

Smoking :

There is a misconception that smoking helps to lose weight as it suppresses appetite and thus the smokers justify their action. But such kind of weight reduction with suppressed appetite and keeping ourselves starved for a longer time is not at all appreciable. Moreover, it can be detrimental to our health and it may increase cravings for fatty and sugary foods. Further, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are often correlated with smoking. Therefore, it is not at all recommended rather smokers are advised to keep them busy with some other recreational activities to avoid its lust.

Frequency of dining out :

Weekend treats and frequent outings with calorie laden meals and aerated drinks plays a major role for spoiling our weight loss journey. Although dining out is not bad, yet for this, we need to keep a track of what we eat and how many servings do we take to control your eating and dine out responsibly.

To sum up the issue, one should be aware of good and bad foods and foods with no or less nutritional value and should be smart enough to plan a balanced and well nourished diet, only then eating while cheating will be fine and enjoyable.

LOW CALORIC MEALS ON THE WHEELS

Taking off from our hectic and monotonous daily routine and going out for a long drive or to some nearby picnic place for a shorter period is a part of our life. During such drive downs, usually we also take our healthy diet plans for a ride. But the health conscious guys make it a point to plan well before starting their journey. They also plan for their intake stuff during the journey besides the other things. For such people, here are some of the options from which they can very well choose their low calorie choices to pack theirsnacks bag.

THEPLA

Thepla is a healthy and nutritious option that can be carried during a trip easily. Moreover, it is like a chapati that can be consumed dry or with some pickle. Whole wheat gram flour and fenugreek leaves can be used to make it at home and it is good to be consumed by the kids, who avoid green leafy vegetables. We may add up spinach, bottle gourd or cumin seeds to it to make it more healthy and it can be consumed at room temperature and require no heating.

KHAKHRA

It is an another healthy snack which can also be prepared at home by adding some herbs and spices as per our taste. We can make it more nutritious by adding bajra, oats or finger millet flour. To add fat burning effect in it, we can add black pepper, ajwain and sesame seeds in it, which also make it more healthy and nutritious. This snack can be used for a couple of weeks if stored in air tight containers.

ROASTED MAKHANNAS

Another healthy snack which can be taken as mid snack to satisfy cravings are roasted makhannas. These can be dry roasted  or a little of oil can be used to make them crunchy.  These are a good source of protein and fibre, besides being low calorie snack and very nutritive one. These will not let us feel hungry while travelling. After roasting, these should be stored  in air tight containers for consuming for longer periods.

DRY TRAIL MIX

To satisfy the cravings of some crunchy food during travelling, we can carry chivda, puffed rice, seeds and nuts mix. To make it more healthy, we can add curry leaves and some roasted black Channa and bajra into it. It can fuel us with energy if we are feeling low while travelling and save us from choosing  unhealthy foods instead during your journey. Nuts and seed mix fill us with energy  and we feel full for a longer time.

BAKED BANANA AND APPLE CHIPS

Another healthy option on the desk is to bake chips of these fruits and carry this crunchy snack along while travelling. We can pop up fruit rings in the oven, sprinkle some rock salt and carry along. Cinnamon baked apple and banana chips are much better than potato chips. We can simply microwave them and carry along on our trip to savour upon unhealthy choices of our kids.

Another advantage of carrying such foods with us while travelling is that portion eating becomes possible for us, otherwise we may consume large meals at one go on our stoppages at food outlets on the way. Moreover, such snacks do not get spoiled and do not need any extra care while travelling. The left over can be consumed later.
